Dear Kitah Dalet families,
as a Temple Israel community!
Shalom, Kitah Dalet parents,
Our Daletniks are moving along into the Alephbet! In our 3rd Ivrit (Hebrew) session yesterday we completed our learning station orientation and really got down to the business of decoding Hebrew with a fun twist. They reviewed the letters and vowels learned so far and received the next assignment, including letters י, ה, ד, ח, and vowels וּ and ִ.
I want to let you know that in the early weeks of the school year our Merkaz L’Ivrit (Hebrew Resource Room) instructor, Ariela Wehrle, conducts assessments of every child’s Hebrew skills. This is a great way to prevent students from “falling through the cracks.” Do not be alarmed if your child tells you that he/she was asked to spend some time in the Merkaz. If she finds gaps in a students letter and vowel recognition she will recommend that the student work with her fairly regularly for 20 minutes, as part of a small group. Students will usually be back in my classroom in time do work at least one learning station.
I’m already starting to notice some students with some degree of hesitation in decoding. I will be in touch with you individually to follow up and will recommend that he/she make use of the Merkaz L’Ivrit. I will also repeat my offer of a 15-min tutorial session right after class (11:30-11:45) to any student needing extra help on an occasional or regular basis. Since I can only offer this to one student a week, please give me 24-hour notice if you’d like to take me up on the offer.
Please encourage your child to do the weekly reading and writing assignments. There is a place to sign or initial homework to let me know that you’ve seen your child’s work and listened to him/her read the assigned material. Please know that the reading can be checked by any older person with the use of the transliteration provided with each reading page. If your child’s home assignment didn’t make it home, please find it on the TINW webpage under “Learn With Us.”
I will echo here Ms. Deckert’s announcement that there will be no morning class next Sunday (9/30) but, rather, a Simhat Torah program from 5:00 to after the service.
Looking forward to seeing you then,
Lane Chazdon
